Deiveson Figueiredo Awaits MRI Results for Knee Injury After Sandhagen Loss

Sports news » Deiveson Figueiredo Awaits MRI Results for Knee Injury After Sandhagen Loss

Deiveson Figueiredo will not know the full severity of his knee injury until he returns to Brazil for an MRI scan. The injury occurred during his disappointing main event bout against Cory Sandhagen at UFC Des Moines.

His manager, Alex Davis, reported on Sunday that the former two-time UFC flyweight champion remains optimistic and in good spirits, hoping the injury is not serious.

Although the extent is not yet confirmed, there is a possibility he suffered only a knee strain, which would be a much better outcome than a tear potentially requiring surgery.

The injury happened in the second round during ground fighting. As Sandhagen sat up, it twisted Figueiredo’s knee, causing him significant pain and an immediate tap. Sandhagen explained afterward that this ground position is frequently practiced with his grappling coach Ryan Hall, noting that such knee injuries are not unusual in that scenario.

This appears to be what happened to Figueiredo, who needed assistance leaving the octagon and went backstage for medical care.

Shortly after the fight concluded, Figueiredo shared a brief message on social media addressing the loss.

On Instagram, Figueiredo wrote: “The outcome isn`t always what we desire, but the battle continues. Heartfelt thanks to God, my family, my team, and everyone who cheers for me, supports me, and believes in me.”

He added, “We will return stronger. I am a fighter, and this is merely another part of my journey!”

This defeat marks Figueiredo`s second consecutive loss, following a decision loss in a tough five-round contest against former champion Petr Yan last November.

Before these two losses, Figueiredo had an impressive run in the bantamweight division with three consecutive victories, including wins over former champion Cody Garbrandt and one-time title challenger Marlon Vera.

As Figueiredo heads back to Brazil, he is scheduled to see his doctor soon for the MRI scan, which will reveal the complete extent of the injury to his leg.
