UFC CEO Dana White has officially announced that welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry is designated as the backup fighter for the championship contest scheduled for UFC 315. This bout is set to feature Belal Muhammad against Jack Della Maddalena on May 10th in Canada.

Shortly after his main event victory over Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City, Garry himself stated his intention to travel to Montreal the following month. His plan involves making the championship weight to be prepared as an alternate should either of the primary fighters be unable to compete.

During his post-fight interview inside the cage, Garry declared, “21 days’ notice against Shavkat [Rakhmonov]. 25 days’ notice against this man tonight. He’s a beast.” He then added, “Well, in two weeks’ time, I’m flying to Canada. I’m the official backup for the world title fight, and I’m next in line for that world title!”

When questioned about Garry`s assertion during the subsequent UFC Kansas City post-fight press conference, White confirmed its validity, stating simply, “it’s official.”

White also commended Garry for his willingness to accept fights on short notice. “Credit to Ian, takes these fights on short notice,” White said. “He’ll fight anybody. He looked good tonight.”

Belal Muhammad is reportedly scheduled to make his first defense of the 170-pound championship, having apparently claimed the title from Leon Edwards in July 2024, according to the original report. Meanwhile, Jack Della Maddalena enters this significant matchup riding an impressive 17-fight winning streak, with seven of those victories occurring under the UFC banner.

Garry`s only professional defeat in the UFC came last December on short notice against Shavkat Rakhmonov, a decision loss despite a competitive effort. The Irish prospect had secured eight consecutive wins within the promotion prior to that and has now returned to the win column with his recent decision victory over Carlos Prates.
