The 2026 Candidates Chess tournament, commencing this week in Paphos, Cyprus, is generating considerable tension. Beyond determining the challenger, the smooth execution of the event is also under scrutiny. Indian Grandmaster Humpy Koneru announced her withdrawal from the women’s section, citing safety concerns in Cyprus. In an exclusive statement, Koneru remarked, “If FIDE believes Cyprus is suitable for the Candidates, they should also consider holding tournaments in places like Jammu & Kashmir.”

Criton Tornaritis, President of the Cyprus Chess Federation, expressed his strong disappointment regarding Koneru Humpy’s decision. “I am genuinely disappointed by Koneru Humpy’s decision to withdraw, citing that Cyprus ‘is not safe.’ This is simply incorrect,” Tornaritis stated. He emphasized that the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament is a globally significant chess event. Tornaritis further criticized, “Spreading unfounded concerns harms the sport and shows a lack of respect toward the organizers and the participating players. At the pinnacle of chess, decisions are guided by calculation and facts, not by fear or misinformation. It was a poor strategic move.”
