The Calgary Flames have had a better season than many expected, although making the playoffs remains a challenge.
Even if a playoff berth is unlikely, the Flames can begin planning for the future in the last couple of weeks of the season and might give one of their highly-regarded prospects a taste of the NHL.
Sportsnet`s Elliotte Friedman initially mentioned on Saturday Headlines during Hockey Night in Canada that defenseman Zayne Parekh could be joining the team after the Saginaw Spirit were eliminated from the OHL playoffs.
`He`s going to Calgary and we`ll see when they can put him into the lineup,` Friedman explained on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast Monday. `… I hope Parekh gets an opportunity to play. I want to watch him. I understand there will be an adjustment period, but I really want to see how he performs against NHL-level competition.`
The 19-year-old has achieved 33 goals and 107 points this season. He was drafted ninth overall in the 2024 NHL Draft and signed his entry-level contract soon after being drafted.
Calgary is currently six points behind the Minnesota Wild for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Flames have two games in hand on the Wild, whom they are scheduled to play on April 11.
