The protracted legal and personal conflict between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal has once again reached the courtroom.
Once close allies who trained together at American Top Team for nearly a decade, Covington and Masvidal’s friendship dissolved as their careers advanced. Their bond morphed into one of the UFC’s most acrimonious rivalries, driven by ego and simmering resentment.
This intense animosity ultimately culminated in a clash inside the Octagon at UFC 272, where Covington, known as “Chaos,” secured a decisive unanimous decision victory over his former training partner, settling their in-cage dispute.
However, contrary to expectations that their fight would resolve the animosity, the feud only escalated. Just weeks after their professional bout, Masvidal, dubbed “Gamebred,” ambushed Covington outside Papi Steak in Miami Beach as he was leaving the establishment. This incident led to Masvidal facing severe legal consequences, including charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief.
Following a series of court proceedings, the case against Masvidal concluded in November 2023 when he pleaded guilty to the charges. His sentence included time already served and an order to cover the legal costs associated with the case. Despite the serious nature of the charges, which carried a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison, Masvidal avoided any additional jail time.
Now, in April 2026, Colby Covington has initiated new legal proceedings against Jorge Masvidal, extending the judicial repercussions stemming from the earlier attack.
Colby Covington Seeks Over $50,000 in Damages from Jorge Masvidal for 2022 Miami Assault
On March 23, Colby Covington formally filed a lawsuit in Miami-Dade County, targeting Jorge Masvidal and seeking more than $50,000 in damages related to the 2022 incident outside the steakhouse.
Court filings submitted by Covington’s legal team assert that his definitive victory over Masvidal at UFC 272 allegedly left the 41-year-old Miami native enraged. The filings further claim that Masvidal made a direct threat during his post-fight interview, stating, “if I see him out in the streets, I’m going to give him everything I got to break his f*cking jaw.”
Covington’s attorneys argue in the legal documents that Masvidal’s attack was deliberate and intended to inflict serious harm. They also state that “Chaos” suffered both head and other physical injuries as a result of the incident, and that his Rolex watch sustained approximately $15,000 in damage.
Colby Covington has formally requested a jury trial, though a specific court date has not yet been scheduled since the lawsuit’s filing.
