Sports news » Claude Giroux Signs Extension with Senators to Avoid Free Agency

Veteran forward Claude Giroux will continue his tenure with the Ottawa Senators. The team announced Sunday that Giroux has signed a one-year contract extension, thus bypassing free agency.

The agreement includes a base salary of $2 million for the upcoming season, with potential earnings reaching up to $4.75 million through performance bonuses.

In a statement, Senators President and General Manager Steve Staios praised Giroux: “Claude provides veteran leadership and a competitive edge to our team, consistently making an impact both on and off the ice. We are pleased to have him return for next season.”

Before joining Ottawa on a three-year contract ahead of the 2022-23 season, Giroux spent parts of 15 seasons with Philadelphia. During his time in Ottawa, the 37-year-old forward has been remarkably durable, missing only one regular-season game and accumulating 71 goals and 193 points over the three campaigns.

In the 2024-25 season specifically, he recorded 15 goals and 35 assists.

Over his extensive 18-year NHL career, Giroux has played 1,263 regular-season games, tallying 365 goals and 1,116 points, along with 29 goals and 86 points in 101 playoff appearances.
