Sports news ยป Chelsea Engages in Talks with Xabi Alonso for Managerial Vacancy

Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly being considered for his next coaching role this summer, with Chelsea expressing interest in the Basque coach. Alonso has also been strongly linked with the Liverpool position should their current manager, Arne Slot, not continue at Anfield.

During a challenging period for Slot at Liverpool, Alonso’s name has been a recurring topic. Liverpool had previously attempted to bring Alonso back to the club before appointing Slot, but he was reportedly holding out for the Real Madrid job. Since his departure from the Santiago Bernabรฉu, there have been numerous reports suggesting Liverpool’s interest in a reunion.

Chelsea Approaches Xabi Alonso

However, Chelsea appears to be the first club to formally make an approach. The Blues have been actively searching for a new manager since parting ways with Liam Rosenior last month, with Graham MacFarlane currently serving as interim manager. MacFarlane is the third manager to lead the team this season, following Enzo Maresca’s earlier departure.

According to reports, Alonso is now considered the leading candidate for the Chelsea job, and initial discussions have already commenced. Alonso himself is reportedly eager to return to England. Further reports indicate that Alonso will listen to Chelsea’s proposal, and if he decides to accept, the job would likely be his. It also appears that Arne Slot will continue as Liverpool’s manager next season, suggesting Alonso may not be tempted by a return to his former club.

Andoni Iraola Also a Contender for Chelsea

Another Basque manager, Andoni Iraola, is also being considered for the Chelsea position. Having announced his departure from Bournemouth at the end of the season, Iraola has been closely associated with the Crystal Palace job, though this has been denied. Iraola is among Chelsea’s preferred alternative candidates. The club’s shortlist also includes Filipe Luis, Oliver Glasner, and Fulham’s Marco Silva.
