Chael Sonnen Explains What May Push Michael Chandler to Retire in 2026

Sports news » Chael Sonnen Explains What May Push Michael Chandler to Retire in 2026

UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen has shared his insights on the factors that might lead Michael “Iron” Chandler to retire from mixed martial arts by 2026.

Chandler is set to face Mauricio Ruffy on June 14 at an event on the South Lawn of the White House. Originally, the 39-year-old fighter had hoped for a highly anticipated bout against Conor McGregor, aiming to conclude their rivalry stemming from The Ultimate Fighter 31. However, UFC President Dana White indicated different plans for Chandler, dismissing the possibility of a McGregor-Chandler fight in the near future.

Currently, Chandler is enduring a three-fight losing streak, having lost five of his last six outings in the UFC. He now faces a formidable challenge in the surging 29-year-old knockout artist, Mauricio Ruffy. Betting odds already suggest a difficult path for “Iron” against his younger opponent.

Chael Sonnen’s Take on Chandler’s Potential Retirement

Chael Sonnen believes that a loss at UFC Freedom 250 against Ruffy could be the catalyst for Michael Chandler to hang up his gloves. In a recent video posted on his YouTube channel, Sonnen explained that while Chandler still harbors aspirations of becoming a UFC champion, suffering a fourth consecutive defeat at 39 years old would make that dream increasingly unrealistic. Consequently, if Chandler is defeated by Mauricio Ruffy on June 14, retirement might become his chosen path.

Sonnen elaborated: “Chandler will retire if Ruffy beats him. He likely will, and I do not know if it will necessarily be his choice. Chandler is now 38 years old. Chandler is also gainfully employed by Paramount and is going to be part of the announcing team. And should he lose a fight, that would probably just be a point in Chandler’s career. Chandler’s one of those guys who still wants to be a world champion. So if he gets confronted with that’s just not in your future… He likely would say, ‘Fair enough. Give my spot to somebody else.'”
