The Washington Capitals are bolstering their roster as they gear up for the playoffs.
On Monday, the Capitals announced the signing of their top prospect, Ryan Leonard, to a three-year entry-level contract. The contract has an annual average value of $950,000.
According to reports, Leonard is anticipated to make his NHL debut on Tuesday in a game against the Boston Bruins.
Leonard, age 20, was the eighth overall pick by the Capitals in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for Boston College for the past two seasons. Boston College was recently eliminated from the Frozen Four tournament by Denver.
Leonard is a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award for the 2024-25 season. He recorded 30 goals and 49 points in 37 games for Boston College. As captain, he also led the United States to a gold medal at the 2025 World Junior Championship, where he was the team`s top scorer with five goals and five assists in seven games.
The Capitals have already secured a playoff spot and currently lead the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference standings. If the playoffs started today, they would face the Montreal Canadiens in the first round.
