WASHINGTON — Tom Wilson marked his 31st goal of the season, while Alex Ovechkin provided two assists, propelling the Washington Capitals to a fourth consecutive victory. They triumphed over the Florida Panthers, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, further solidifying their lead in the NHL.
Wilson played a key role in Connor McMichael`s initial goal during the first period. Shortly after the intermission, Wilson himself scored just 7 seconds into the period. Dylan Strome then added another goal 52 seconds later, bringing the total goals to eight within the first 21 minutes of a game characterized by high offensive output and less emphasis on defense.
Additional goals for the Capitals were scored by Anthony Beauvillier, John Carlson, and Andrew Mangiapane. The Capitals have already secured a playoff spot, being the first team in the league to do so, and have won nine out of their last ten games. Goaltender Logan Thompson was instrumental in the win, making 33 saves and improving his season record to 31-4-5 in his first year with Washington.
Ovechkin, despite having five shots on goal, remains at 888 career goals, needing seven more to surpass Wayne Gretzky`s record.
For the Panthers, goals were scored by Sam Bennett, Seth Jones, and Jonah Gadjovich. The team was missing key players, including injured winger Matthew Tkachuk and suspended defenseman Aaron Ekblad. They are also awaiting the debut of Brad Marchand, a recent trade acquisition. Panthers` goalie Vitek Vanecek conceded six goals out of 31 shots.
