Vancouver Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood achieved a historic milestone in the NHL on Saturday afternoon.
Surpassing the previous record, Sherwood now holds the league record for the most hits in a single season with an impressive 384 hits during the 2024-25 season.
The record-breaking hit occurred against his former teammate, Carson Soucy, in the opening moments of the Canucks` game against the New York Rangers.
He eclipsed the previous record of 383 hits, which was set last season by Nashville Predators defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. Interestingly, Sherwood and Lauzon were teammates in Nashville when Lauzon set the prior record.
Matt Martin, a New York Islanders winger, previously held the next three highest single-season hit records: 382 in 2014-15, 374 in 2011-12, and 365 in 2015-16.
Entering Saturday`s game with 383 hits accumulated over 65 games, Sherwood, aged 29, was already significantly ahead of his closest competitors on the leaderboard. He had a remarkable 123 hit advantage over Luke Schenn and Mathieu Olivier, who each had 260 hits.
Adding to his physical play, Sherwood has also contributed offensively this season, recording 15 goals and 14 assists.
