CALGARY — Aydar Suniev, the Calgary Flames` promising prospect, arrived at a recent game in a borrowed purple suit after his luggage was lost in transit.
The 20-year-old, known for his scoring ability, is seen by many as a potential key player for the Flames, an organization in need of offensive firepower.
The Flames, currently ranked low in league scoring, are excited about the addition of Suniev, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound forward with a reputation for playmaking and finishing. General Manager Craig Conroy views him as another valuable piece in the team`s rebuilding process.
Suniev, drafted in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft, was acquired using a pick obtained in the Tyler Toffoli trade. He represents Conroy`s strategy of combining draft pick accumulation with the pursuit of playoff contention.
After demonstrating his scoring prowess in Penticton, where he averaged almost a goal per game, Suniev continued his development at UMass-Amherst. In his sophomore year, he tallied 20 goals and 18 assists in 35 games, showcasing his impressive shot.
Following the conclusion of his college season, Suniev signed a three-year contract this week and quickly joined the Flames in Calgary, making a strong early impression.
Coach Ryan Huska commented on his first meeting with Suniev, noting his size and presence.
Fans may get a chance to see Suniev play before the end of the season, provided his hockey equipment is recovered soon.
In the meantime, Suniev is focused on learning and adapting, aiming to make his transition to professional hockey as smooth as possible.
“The past few days have been a whirlwind, and I`m still processing everything,” said Suniev, who is not eligible to play for the Wranglers this season.
“I believe I`ve made significant progress this year, and I feel ready for the next challenge.”
Comparisons are already being made between his shot and that of Matt Coronato, adding to the anticipation surrounding his debut.
Suniev`s powerful shot was on display at a recent optional skate with the Flames, after his gear finally arrived.
Describing himself as a two-way power forward, Suniev emphasizes his commitment to playing effectively at both ends of the ice.
“My shot and goal-scoring ability are definitely my strengths,” he stated.
His scoring record of 54 goals and 59 assists in 65 games for Penticton in his draft year underscores his offensive talent.
When asked about his hockey idols, Suniev mentioned Pavel Datsyuk from his younger years, but currently admires Auston Matthews.
“I try to model my game after him,” Suniev concluded.
