Cain Velasquez Apologizes Before Sentencing

Sports news » Cain Velasquez Apologizes Before Sentencing

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has apologized for his actions in court, just before being sentenced to five years in prison. This sentence follows his no-contest plea to attempted murder charges.

Velasquez, initially arrested in February 2022, addressed the court prior to Judge Arthur Bocanegra delivering the sentence. He faced multiple felony charges stemming from an incident where he engaged in an 11-mile high-speed chase, firing a handgun at a vehicle. The target was Harry Goularte, the man accused of sexually abusing Velasquez`s young son at a daycare owned by Goularte’s mother.

During the chase, a bullet struck Goularte`s stepfather, Paul Bender, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Velasquez was arrested at the scene without further incident. Addressing the court, Velasquez expressed remorse for his conduct.

“I am truly sorry,” Velasquez stated, according to reports. “My actions were reckless and extremely dangerous. I am ashamed and deeply regret the way I behaved on that day.”

He continued, “My hope is for healing for my family, for the Goularte family, and for the community as a whole.”

Prosecutors had sought a sentence of 30 years to life, while Velasquez`s defense argued for time served and probation.

Judge Bocanegra opted for a lesser sentence, acknowledging that while Velasquez must be held accountable, his family also suffered due to the alleged child molestation case involving his son.

Velasquez`s five-year sentence includes credit for 1,283 days already served, encompassing his time in jail and under house arrest.

It is anticipated that Velasquez will serve less than two years in prison, potentially even less with credit for good behavior.

Surrounded by friends and family in court, Velasquez was granted a moment with his wife and children before being taken into custody to begin his sentence.
