Bo Nickal reflects on Reiner de Ridder loss: ‘I wasn’t as prepared as I thought’

Sports news » Bo Nickal reflects on Reiner de Ridder loss: ‘I wasn’t as prepared as I thought’

Bo Nickal is handling the first defeat of his UFC career with a measured perspective.

Last weekend, Nickal`s previously undefeated MMA record was broken when he was stopped by Reiner de Ridder during the co-main event of UFC Des Moines. The loss was unexpected, especially given the significant anticipation surrounding Nickal as a rising star. However, Nickal views this setback as ultimately beneficial for his career trajectory.

“It`s been a whirlwind, but I`ve done a lot of reflecting,” Nickal shared with Ariel Helwani. “Immediately after the fight, I was clearly very disappointed and frustrated with myself. I`m truly thankful that I have a strong foundation of values and guidance from others. I don`t feel that my ultimate goal, or my sense of self, has been altered by this.”

“While it`s tough to go through that because I hate losing, having experienced several significant losses in the past that proved to be major catalysts in my life and career, I`m already feeling grateful for this one. I see this as nothing but a chance to learn and grow, which I believe will only help me improve and become better.”

Although many saw the loss as an upset, Nickal stated he recognized de Ridder as a serious opponent and emphasized he did not underestimate “The Dutch Knight” in his preparation. According to Nickal, the real issue was his lack of necessary experience at this specific competitive level.

“I felt incredibly confident going into the fight. In my mind beforehand, I was convinced I had done everything required to win,” Nickal explained. “I felt great. But now, looking back and processing it, I realize I wasn`t as ready as I thought. There were many aspects I could have improved upon beforehand, things I could have focused on and approached differently…”

“It`s difficult to foresee or assume everything that will happen in a fight because I don`t have years and years of repetitions and experience against different fighting styles. So when I analyze that fight, some of de Ridder`s biggest advantages that were effective were things I simply wasn`t prepared for.”

As a highly decorated three-time NCAA Division I national champion wrestler (with one runner-up finish), Nickal entered the MMA world in 2021 hailed as one of the most promising newcomers in years. Nickal himself fueled this excitement, openly discussing his ambitions and abilities. This bold confidence sometimes irritated others, and after his defeat, fans and fellow fighters celebrated what some called his “humble pie.” Despite this, Nickal maintains he wouldn`t change his approach.

“I don`t have a single regret,” Nickal asserted. “I believe in myself absolutely, and I will always back myself. I don`t let a win or a loss define me. I`ve won frequently and lost rarely, and neither the wins nor the losses determine who I am. I possess a self-belief that is unwavering, no matter what. People can say whatever they want, and the outcome is what it is, but I will still wake up every morning, pursue my goals relentlessly, and give my all every single day.”

“My confidence in my abilities remains completely intact, and this loss serves only to motivate me further.”

Regarding his next steps, Nickal doesn`t have specific plans yet, but he is eager to compete again soon to move past the taste of defeat.

“I was talking with Coach Mike [Brown] on the way back, and I told him, `I want to fight ASAP. Let`s get right back at it.` However, I`ll consult with the coaches to determine the best course of action,” Nickal stated. “I need to ensure I`m back to 100 percent health and capable of putting together a full training camp. We`ll see. I`d like to compete a couple more times this year, so returning quickly would be beneficial for me.”
