COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets delivered a decisive 7-0 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday, with Adam Fantilli netting a pair of goals and goaltender Jet Greaves securing his first NHL shutout by stopping 22 shots. The Capitals played without Alex Ovechkin, who was rested as a healthy scratch.
Ovechkin, who recently surpassed Wayne Gretzky`s record for career NHL goals, was given a night off to prepare for the playoffs. The Washington Capitals have already secured the top spot in the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference.
This win keeps the Columbus Blue Jackets in contention for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Montreal Canadiens, currently leading in the race for that playoff position, were scheduled to play against the Toronto Maple Leafs later on Saturday.
James van Riemsdyk contributed a goal and two assists for Columbus, while Kent Johnson and Sean Monahan each scored a goal and provided an assist. Zach Werenski and Cole Sillinger also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have now won their last three games.
Hunter Shepard, recalled from AHL Hershey, made 19 saves for the Washington Capitals in his first NHL start of the season.
