Ben Askren Doubts Sean O’Malley’s Rematch Decision Against Merab Dvalishvili

Sports news » Ben Askren Doubts Sean O’Malley’s Rematch Decision Against Merab Dvalishvili

Former fighter Ben Askren is uncertain about Sean O`Malley`s decision to have a rematch with Merab Dvalishvili right away at UFC 316. While Askren believes O`Malley could potentially win, he questions the timing of this fight.

Dvalishvili defeated O`Malley by unanimous decision at UFC 306 in September to win the title. Their rematch is scheduled for June 7 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Askren suggests that it might have been wiser for O`Malley to face a different opponent with a different fighting style before taking on Dvalishvili again.

During a discussion on Funky & The Champ with Daniel Cormier, Askren expressed his reservations: “I think this might not be the best move for him. If Merab defeats him again, O`Malley`s popularity could decline. People might think, `He`s already lost to the champion twice, why would he get another title shot anytime soon?`”

Askren elaborated, “O`Malley could have fought some lower-ranked opponents, particularly those who are not strong wrestlers. Against such fighters, his exciting striking style would really shine, allowing him to rebuild his image and generate more hype for future big fights. However, now the general feeling might be… `We just saw this fight, it wasn`t close. Why are we seeing it again?`”

O`Malley has stated that he has made significant life adjustments since his loss to Dvalishvili, including taking a break from social media. He believes these changes have put him in a better physical and mental state as he prepares for his upcoming championship fight.

Dvalishvili`s successful pressure and wrestling were key in their first match. Askren thinks O`Malley should have spent more time focusing on improving his wrestling skills before this rematch.

“I wish Sean had dedicated more time to improving his wrestling,” Askren commented. “He definitely has impressive striking and knockout power. However, Merab has looked dominant and almost unbeatable in his recent fights.”
