Barcelona’s Plans for Joao Cancelo Face Major Snag, Future at Club Uncertain

Sports news » Barcelona’s Plans for Joao Cancelo Face Major Snag, Future at Club Uncertain

Barcelona unexpectedly secured Joao Cancelo on a winter loan from Al-Hilal. Recently, Cancelo’s impressive performances have garnered attention, making a permanent stay at the club a strong possibility for the Portuguese international.

This marks Cancelo’s second loan stint from Al-Hilal, having rejoined Barcelona in January for the remainder of the season, 18 months after his initial spell concluded. Due to injuries affecting Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde, Cancelo has unexpectedly taken on a key role, particularly shining at left-back as a replacement for Balde.

Barcelona Intend to Retain Cancelo This Summer

Consequently, reports indicate Barcelona’s strong desire to retain Cancelo beyond his current loan agreement this summer. The 31-year-old is reportedly keen to continue playing at Europe’s elite level. Beyond his recent form, his adaptability is highly valued by the club, and manager Hansi Flick has reportedly approved making his move permanent.

Al-Hilal Conditions Represent Major Snag

However, securing mutually agreeable terms for a permanent transfer remains a significant challenge for the Blaugrana. While Barcelona has indicated a willingness to sign Cancelo permanently, they reportedly prefer a free transfer, which would require Cancelo to negotiate an early termination of his contract with Al-Hilal. Spanish outlet MD reports that the Saudi club is demanding €15 million for Cancelo this summer. Given Barcelona’s expectation that Cancelo would already need to accept a substantial pay cut, it appears improbable that he could personally cover the transfer fee.

Negotiation Position?

Nevertheless, this demand might merely be a negotiation tactic from Al-Hilal. Cancelo does not appear to be part of their future plans, and with only a year remaining on his contract and entering his thirties, his market value for them is diminishing. Should they insist on keeping him, his high wages make it unlikely they would secure a favorable transfer deal later this summer.
