Barcelona Nears La Liga Title After Getafe Victory

Sports news » Barcelona Nears La Liga Title After Getafe Victory

Barcelona has opened up an 11-point lead over Real Madrid at the summit of La Liga, bringing them tantalizingly close to securing the title with only five games remaining. The Catalan giants managed a hard-fought victory against a defensively robust Getafe.

The match began with an early opportunity for Barcelona as Dani Olmo went wide after a skillful run. However, after the initial flurry, the game settled into a slower, more fragmented rhythm, dictated by Getafe’s defensive setup.

Despite Barcelona’s attempts to break down the organized defense, a clear chance didn’t materialize until the 36th minute. Roony Bardghji’s shot went wide after an exchange with Jules Kounde. Getafe, meanwhile, posed a threat from set-pieces.

Frustration mounted for Getafe as they conceded just before halftime. Following a defensive intervention by Pau Cubarsi, Pedri initiated a swift counter-attack, finding Fermin Lopez who coolly finished into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.

In the second half, Barcelona adopted a more relaxed approach, inviting Getafe forward. Hansi Flick’s side exploited gaps in the Getafe defense, with Kounde making runs and providing a chance for Olmo, which was ultimately saved by David Soria.

Around the hour mark, Pedri’s midfield interception nearly led to a goal for Bardghji, but a crucial last-ditch tackle from Dakonam Djene thwarted the attack. Getafe responded with their own attacking pressure, with Martin Satriano holding up play and Mauro Arambarri finding Mario Martin, though there was no immediate support in the box.

The game’s turning point came with 15 minutes remaining. Following a defensive scramble, Getafe left themselves exposed from a corner. Robert Lewandowski launched a long ball from his own half to substitute Marcus Rashford, who capitalized on the space and confidently finished past the goalkeeper.

While Barcelona found it challenging to consistently break down Getafe’s defense, they ultimately managed to secure the win without conceding. Getafe, despite controlling periods of the game and imposing their preferred tempo, failed to inflict enough defensive pressure to unsettle Barcelona’s possession play.

This defeat ends Getafe’s three-month unbeaten home run and a seven-year streak without a home loss to Barcelona. Getafe remains provisionally in sixth place, awaiting other results. Barcelona, despite some physical exertion, is now firmly on course for the La Liga title.
