Barcelona has opened up an 11-point lead over Real Madrid at the summit of La Liga, bringing them tantalizingly close to securing the title with only five games remaining. The Catalan giants managed a hard-fought victory against a defensively robust Getafe.
The match began with an early opportunity for Barcelona as Dani Olmo went wide after a skillful run. However, after the initial flurry, the game settled into a slower, more fragmented rhythm, dictated by Getafe’s defensive setup.
Despite Barcelona’s attempts to break down the organized defense, a clear chance didn’t materialize until the 36th minute. Roony Bardghji’s shot went wide after an exchange with Jules Kounde. Getafe, meanwhile, posed a threat from set-pieces.

Around the hour mark, Pedri’s midfield interception nearly led to a goal for Bardghji, but a crucial last-ditch tackle from Dakonam Djene thwarted the attack. Getafe responded with their own attacking pressure, with Martin Satriano holding up play and Mauro Arambarri finding Mario Martin, though there was no immediate support in the box.
The game’s turning point came with 15 minutes remaining. Following a defensive scramble, Getafe left themselves exposed from a corner. Robert Lewandowski launched a long ball from his own half to substitute Marcus Rashford, who capitalized on the space and confidently finished past the goalkeeper.
While Barcelona found it challenging to consistently break down Getafe’s defense, they ultimately managed to secure the win without conceding. Getafe, despite controlling periods of the game and imposing their preferred tempo, failed to inflict enough defensive pressure to unsettle Barcelona’s possession play.
