Barcelona appeared to be closing in on a permanent deal for Marcus Rashford this summer, yet the transfer is far from finalized. The Manchester United loanee is expected to trigger a €30m buy option, in addition to a substantial salary. Rashford has reportedly informed Manchester United of his decision not to return to the club.
The England international’s season at Camp Nou has been inconsistent, marked by flashes of brilliance. Nevertheless, he has provided crucial contributions of 10 goals and 13 assists, particularly during Raphinha’s injury layoffs. Both Rashford and Barcelona manager Hansi Flick have voiced their interest in keeping him, but the club’s ongoing salary cap issues present a significant hurdle, making a deal uncertain.
According to Marca, Barcelona’s Director of Football, Deco, has already identified two potential alternatives should the move for Rashford not materialize. Intriguingly, Marca also reports that terms for Rashford’s transfer are reportedly already agreed upon with Manchester United, with the finalization of the move awaiting Barcelona’s definitive decision. Furthermore, the completion of Rashford’s signing is seen as more probable if Laporta secures election.
Ez Abde: A Potential Return for the Real Betis Winger
Among the alternative options is former Barcelona player Ez Abde, who has enjoyed an impressive season at Real Betis. Following a somewhat inconsistent initial year, Abde has established himself as a consistent attacking presence under Manuel Pellegrini. The Morocco international has registered nine goals and seven assists this season. Crucially, Barcelona retains a 20% sell-on clause, which would provide a significant discount on any potential transfer. Reports also suggest strong Premier League interest in Abde this summer.
Jan Virgili: Impressive Debut Season at RCD Mallorca
The second player on Deco’s shortlist is Jan Virgili, who departed Barcelona last summer for RCD Mallorca, seeking more first-team opportunities, which were limited by Rashford’s presence. The 19-year-old is having a remarkable debut season in La Liga, contributing six assists despite not being a regular starter. Barcelona sold Virgili for €3.5m but wisely included a substantial 50% sell-on clause for the promising teenager.
