Veteran defenseman Brent Burns is joining the Colorado Avalanche after finalizing a one-year contract with the team.
The agreement, announced by the Avalanche on Wednesday, will see the 40-year-old defender earn a base salary of $1 million for the upcoming season. The deal also includes performance-based bonuses that could increase his total compensation by an additional $3 million.
Burns spent the previous three campaigns with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he showcased remarkable durability by participating in every one of their 246 regular-season games and 41 playoff matches. However, his offensive output saw a decrease last season, as he recorded just six goals and 23 assists, his lowest totals since the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.
Recognized for his exceptional ability to stay in the lineup, Burns currently holds the NHL`s longest active ironman streak, having played in 925 consecutive games. He nearly broke the streak in the final game of the regular season but managed to play 24 seconds in the contest.
His current streak places him 139 games behind the all-time NHL record held by Phil Kessel.
Throughout his distinguished career, Burns has amassed 910 points (261 goals and 649 assists) across 1,497 regular-season appearances. In 135 career playoff games, he has contributed 80 points, with 24 goals and 56 assists.
