Grandmaster Humpy Koneru has officially announced her withdrawal from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026. In a statement today, Koneru explained, “After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Womenโs Candidates Tournament. No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances. This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it.”
As a result of Koneru’s withdrawal, Anna Muzychuk will now participate in the Candidates Chess 2026. This change is in accordance with FIDE regulations, which state that if a player withdraws, their place is offered to the next highest finisher from the Womenโs Events Series 2024โ25 who has not yet qualified for the tournament.
