RALEIGH, N.C. — Alex Ovechkin moved closer to Wayne Gretzky`s NHL record, scoring his 892nd career goal as the Washington Capitals were defeated 5-1 by the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

Ovechkin is now just two goals away from tying Gretzky and three from surpassing him. The 39-year-old Russian player expressed his disappointment with the team`s loss and his inability to score again.

He had a close-range shot stopped by Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen early in the second period when the Capitals were down 3-0.

“We had a great opportunity in the second period, a breakaway on the first shift,” Ovechkin commented. “In games like this, you must capitalize on your chances, and I believe all goalies performed well tonight.”

Watch Alex Ovechkin score his signature one-timer for his 892nd career goal, bringing him within three goals of the all-time NHL record.
