Ajax is poised to make a move into La Liga for their next head coach, with the appointment of Michel Sanchez edging closer to completion.
Despite leading Girona to their historic first Champions League qualification just two seasons ago, Michel could not prevent their relegation at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Nevertheless, the 50-year-old’s stock remains high, and he is unlikely to remain in the Segunda Divisiรณn, opting instead for a move to Amsterdam.
Speculation about Michel joining Ajax in the summer has been circulating for a couple of weeks. The latest development brings this closer to reality, as Girona has officially announced in a statement that the former manager of Rayo Vallecano and Huesca has left the club following their relegation.
The club stated: “Mรญchel Sรกnchez will not continue at Girona FC. The club would like to express its sincere gratitude to the Madrid coach for the dedication, commitment and professionalism with which he has led the first team, as well as for the human, close and respectful treatment he has maintained at all times with the members, fans, management and all the workers of the Club.”
Michel’s Memorable Stint at Girona
Although Girona’s season concluded on a disappointing note, Michel is undoubtedly leaving the Catalan club with a strong reputation among the supporters. Guiding them to the Champions League in 2024 is an achievement that will be remembered for a long time, and it’s with their best wishes that they will allow him to move to Ajax.
Girona must now commence their search for a new manager. Attracting the caliber of coach they desire will be challenging given their relegation, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see their squad significantly altered during the summer transfer window.
