Aaron Pico: UFC Was Always the Goal for True Recognition

Sports news » Aaron Pico: UFC Was Always the Goal for True Recognition

While Aaron Pico valued his time competing in Bellator MMA, he always believed that joining the UFC was essential to be considered the world`s best.

After a single fight in the PFL following their acquisition of Bellator, Pico, now 28, became a free agent when his contract ended. He immediately focused on signing with the UFC. Following some public negotiations that resulted in the PFL waiving their right to match offers, Pico officially signed with the UFC on Tuesday, marking the start of a new, challenging chapter.

“The UFC is undeniably the premier MMA organization globally, and it doesn`t seem like anyone will surpass them,” Pico stated in an interview prior to signing. “It`s simply the highest level of competition. While talented fighters exist in other organizations, genuine respect in the sport, in my opinion, comes with being a UFC champion. Look at Patricio Pitbull`s strong desire to compete in the UFC – it speaks volumes.”

“Many fighters aspire to join the UFC because it’s recognized as the best, with unmatched dedication and resources. Other organizations also work hard, but the UFC`s commitment is evident. I want to be part of that environment, contribute my skills, and achieve great things together.”

Notably, Patricio Pitbull, the former Bellator featherweight champion, also secured his release and joined the UFC, scheduled to debut against Yair Rodriguez this Saturday.

Pico sought similar high-level opportunities, especially as he enters his prime and aims for a UFC title shot in the near future.

“I`m constantly improving,” Pico reflected. “Looking back at my first fight compared to now is astonishing. My mindset and skill set have evolved dramatically. It`s almost unbelievable how I even competed back then. The techniques I`m learning now, combined with guidance from my coaches, have brought me to a point where I`m ready to face anyone at featherweight. I genuinely believe I can defeat any 145-pound fighter in the world, and that confidence is incredibly empowering.”

“In my early career, despite my fighting spirit, there was always some hesitation, some uncertainty. But working with Brandon Gibson and coach Greg Jackson has transformed me. I`ve invested significant time and effort, and now I`m completely confident in facing any featherweight, or any fighter worldwide. This is the right time to pursue my ultimate goals.”

Similar to Michael Chandler and Kayla Harrison, Pico arrives in the UFC with significant hype and high expectations, yet his personal ambitions are even greater.

Pico may not be a mainstream name yet, but he always believed that would change once he competed in the UFC. Now, he has the platform to prove it.

“UFC fans haven`t seen what I can do yet,” Pico said. “I believe it`s a whole different level of exposure. I’m really excited for this opportunity.”
